Large payloads and heavy

It is a protocol
SOAP returns XML based data

REST - REpresentational State Transfer
Not strict requirements
Light Weight
Faster
It is an architecture
REST can return plain text, JSON, HTML, XML etc
for Caching
for stateless CRUD operations
